Venture Builder

A fast and effective way to develop new income streams

Government funding cuts and the recent economic environment have changed the financial landscape for UK charities and social enterprises, leaving many of them with significant income shortfalls. The need to develop new, sustainable revenue streams and to enhance existing ones is pressing but charities and social enterprises can often avoid doing so for a number of reasons:

  • Fear of change
  • Organisational inertia
  • Lack of knowledge/confidence
  • Weak management
  • Budgetary constraints

Additionally, many consultancy engagements in support of revenue diversification are long, complex and expensive, making them a serious undertaking for charities and social enterprises. Aperio, with extensive and successful experience enhancing revenue streams, understands your organisation’s need to explore new revenues without spending too many of your existing ones. That’s why we’ve developed Venture Builder.

Aperio Venture Builder

Aperio’s Venture Builder is a quick and effective approach to identifying and implementing earned income for charities. Our experience of working with over 300 third sector organisations in the UK and internationally has enabled us to develop Venture Builder so your organisation can:

  • Assess its readiness to start developing a business venture or to grow your trading enterprises
  • Build its skills, knowledge and assets into earned revenues
  • Gain the confidence and knowledge it needs to bring new venture ideas to life
  • Develop an effective path to implementing your venture

What’s involved?

Venture Builder is an intensive short term programme which involves a mix of training, mentoring, consultancy and research delivered in four phases:

Developing New Enterprise Ventures

Growing Existing Trading Enterprise Profitability

  1. Pre-planning

  2. Preliminary assessment of existing intellectual capital and organisation experience, competencies and culture

  3. Trading/enterprise creation and screening

  4. Preliminary feasibility testing

  5. Assessment of organisational readiness issues and risk including a discussion on appropriate approaches to governance

  6. A preliminary overview of sources of investment funding

  7. Reporting with recommendations and a way forward plan

  1. Pre-planning

  2. Current trading/enterprise business analysis

  3. Feasibility testing of growth opportunities

  4. Assessment of organisational readiness issues and risk, including approaches to governance

  5. A preliminary overview of sources of investment funding

  6. Reporting with recommendations and a way forward plan

The programme uses meetings, telephone, email, research and online project management techniques to enable constant communication and momentum for your project from start to finish. It is a highly rewarding process which will encourage you to look at your organisation in new ways and will give you the confidence to take your first steps to implementing a new source of revenue.

How long does it take?

The process typically takes 4-6 weeks, although this depends on your organisation. We will design the programme based upon your resources and availability. The process is highly iterative and Aperio will ensure that the emphasis is on maintaining momentum and keeping the venture in a constant ‘beta development’ state.

Who will you be working with?

Aperio has extensive experience of building successful third sector ventures in a variety of disciplines.
